The Real Washingtonian Bon Vivant
Consider this the new, independent, deeply opinionated Washington restaurant list. I know DC. I know the food scene. And I pay my own check.
Washingtonian started this obsession, and I still love the list. I just don’t trust it unsupervised. Some rankings suggest brilliant marketing, collective hallucination, or forces my lawyer prefers I not explore.
Life is too short for overpriced mediocrity, reservation Olympics, and bathrooms that should come with penicillin. Most of these restaurants are good. Some are exceptional. A few are downright nasty. I expect hate mail. That’s fine. Reasonable people can disagree. You are still wrong. Buy me dinner at your favorite and maybe you can change my mind. I’ll be at Rose's Luxury while you explain why I'm wrong. Just wash your hands first.

Not every great restaurant is competing in the same category.
You can’t compare Rooster & Owl to Yellow. Both are excellent and both deserve recognition, but one is destination-worthy fine dining and the other is an exceptional counter-service operation.
That’s like ranking a Bentley against a bicycle. Both may be best-in-class. They are not competing in the same category.

Washington has thousands of restaurants inside the Beltway. We are not suffering from a shortage. So why does a Washington dining list keep wandering off to Annapolis, Centreville, Laurel, and beyond? If getting there requires a road trip, it isn’t a Washington restaurant. I reviewed them anyway.
You’ll find them where they belong: Beyond the Beltway.

Is it actually good—or just very good at being talked about?
Some restaurants earn their reputations through years of excellence, while others seem to earn them through social media, marketing, publicity, and momentum. One deserves a ranking. The other deserves scrutiny.
